Cooperation in viscous populations - Experimental evidence

چکیده

We experimentally investigate the effect of imperfect separation of groups (population viscosity) on group selection and cooperation in a standard prisoner’s dilemma environment. Subjects can repeatedly choose between two groups, that differ in the defector gain in the associated prisoner’s dilemma. Choosing into the group with the smaller defector-gain can signal one’s willingness to cooperate. The degree of separation of the two groups is varied between treatments. We find that both, the share of agents that choose into the ”cooperative” group and the share of agents that cooperate, rise sharply with the degree of group separation. Furthermore we estimate the subjects’ intrinsic willingness to cooperate as a function of the expected probability of their match cooperating. Only if viscosity is high ”enough” these functions are strictly increasing.

Environmental viscosity does not affect the evolution of cooperation during experimental evolution of colicigenic bacteria.

Cooperation should be favored under environmental conditions allowing the preferential interaction of cooperators among themselves and limiting interactions with defectors. Bacteria cooperating to kill competitors by secreting a toxin evolved during several hundred generations in two environments: a viscous environment that should promote cooperator assortment, and a nonviscous environment that...

Viscous Populations and Their Support for Reciprocal Cooperation

Viscous populations (those whose members are spatially distributed and have limited mobility and locality of interaction and mating) have been proposed to support the evolution of reciprocal cooperation among self-interested individuals. Here we present a model of such a population and describe how its examination yielded the realization that different classes of viscous populations exist with ...

Cooperation is related to dispersal patterns in Sino-Tibetan populations

There is growing recognition in both evolutionary biology and anthropology that dispersal is key to establishing patterns of cooperation. However, some models predict that cooperation is more likely to evolve in low dispersal (viscous) populations, while others predict that local competition for resources inhibits cooperation. Sex-biased dispersal and extra-pair mating may also have an effect. ...

Invasion of cooperators in lattice populations: Linear and non-linear public good games

A generalized version of the N-person volunteer's dilemma (NVD) Game has been suggested recently for illustrating the problem of N-person social dilemmas. Using standard replicator dynamics it can be shown that coexistence of cooperators and defectors is typical in this model. However, the question of how a rare mutant cooperator could invade a population of defectors is still open. Here we exa...

Evolution of contingent altruism when cooperation is expensive.

The ubiquity of cooperation has motivated a major research program over the last 50 years to discover ever more minimal conditions for the evolution of altruism. One important line of work is based on favoritism toward those who appear to be close relatives. Another important line is based on continuing interactions, whether between individuals (e.g., reciprocity) or between lines of descent in...
